Brass or Zamak? Making the Right Choice in Metal Accessory Procurement

One of the most common questions in metal accessory sourcing is this: what is the difference between brass and zamak, and which is better suited to which application? The answer is shaped not only by cost calculations, but by the product's end-use conditions, design requirements, and the standards of the target market.

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Brass alloys used in textile accessories typically contain 63–70% copper, with the remainder being zinc. This composition delivers high tensile strength, superior corrosion resistance, and excellent machinability. In denim, workwear, outdoor products, and leather accessories in particular, brass reliably handles points of high mechanical stress. For flat-geometry components produced by press stamping, brass is the material of choice.

Zamak, by contrast, is an alloy composed of approximately 96% zinc with small amounts of aluminium, magnesium, and copper. Its low melting point allows complex three-dimensional forms to be produced by die casting. For logo-embossed or relief designs, thin-walled structures, and distinctive geometries, zamak offers a clear manufacturing advantage over brass in terms of production flexibility. Its unit cost is generally lower, though brass retains its superiority in long-term mechanical durability.

The practical decision criterion can be summarised as follows: if the product will bear loads, be subject to pull or tension forces, and is expected to have a long service life, brass should be preferred. When complex logo detail, three-dimensional forms, or cost-driven high-volume orders are involved, zamak represents a viable alternative.
